| Brief History
The Family Violence Center incorporated in May 1976 with the purpose of providing education and support for struggling young families. It soon became apparent that many of the Center's clients were victims of domestic violence and no agencies in the area provided services for this specialized need. The center expanded its mission to support the principle that all individuals have the right to a life free of abuse and opened its shelter doors to women and children fleeing violence.
To date, the Family Violence Center, Inc. has provided shelter to nearly 10,000 women and children. Our 24-hour crisis Hotline has operated continuously for more than a decade providing the first link of help to victims. A children's program addresses the needs of children traumatized by family violence. Support groups meet weekly to provide an opportunity
for women to share their stories, their strengths, and their hopes. Court Advocates assist women with filing orders of protection and provide support throughout court proceedings. The Center's community network assists women with housing, finances, education, employment, medical and legal concerns. The Center provides community education programs as well as technical training for law enforcement, health care providers, and social services.
